The Spry Fly School of Fly Fishing has been operating since 1976 in both Australia and New Zealand, initially under the instruction of renowned instructor, Mike Spry, but nowadays by talented instructor, Will Spry (B.Education, Melbourne University, 1993).
Schools combine a balance of practical skill sessions, both on land and over water, with informative theoretical lectures. Whilst we involve as much time as is possible on the water, it is important to remember that maximum learning happens away from the water, when people can concentrate on the issues being taught, rather than where the next fish is!
Whether it is a brush up on the casting skills that you need, or a hand with learning to spot fish, we'll get you on the right track quickly.
Beginners will be taught good loop control throughout the casting sessions, with an emphasis on control, not distance. We'll also cover the basics for getting that important first few fish on a fly. We'll make it as easy as possible and if you can already cast a bit, we'll put a bit of pep in that cast and get you well on the way to becomming a more proficient caster.
Intermediate and Advanced students should be able to cast 40 - 50 feet of line comfortably, be
able to roll cast, shoot 3 to 4 feet of line and false cast comfortably. Two to five
years of fly fishing experience is recommended. Topics covered include
loop control, mending techniques, the double haul and quick casting techniques - the real secrets to catching more fish! We'll take any problems out of your cast and get you casting more accurately, quickly and further than you ever have before.
